A friend of mine and I like to hang out a local shopping center, shop for photography props and funky snacks at World Market, browse cute clothes at a little boutique, and check out the gear at REI. Typically during our shopping extravaganzas we start to get a little hungry so we will stop by this little juice and smoothie shop.
Normally when we grab smoothies, I’ll pick one with a little less fruit, a little more greens, and some fat to keep things as healthy and balanced as possible. Smoothies can be big fat sugar bombs, which is why I don’t get them often and I treat them like a sweet treat when I do.
But there was this one smoothie, the Date Shake, that kept calling my name. I didn’t order it at first, choosing the green smoothies over the sweeter banana, cashew milk, date concoction. But something about it attracted me each and every time. I think it was the nutmeg. I have a thing for nutmeg. Probably because it reminds me of the holidays.
So I finally ordered it one day and it was delicious. It almost tasted like a thick and creamy banana-y egg nog. Maybe that sounds weird, but it wasn’t. It was super tasty. But you know me, I like having control over all the ingredients.
So I recreated the delicious concoction at home using my homemade cashew milk, some organic dates, a couple frozen bananas and some nutmeg and sea salt. I also added some collagen peptides for a little protein and some MCT oil for added healthy fats to make the smoothie a little more of a balanced treat. These two ingredients aren’t necessary for flavor or consistency though so if you don’t have them don’t stress.
