I’m so excited for Thanksgiving this year! Okay, I get excited for Thanksgiving every year, even the year that we moved to Texas literally on Thanksgiving day (thank you for that US Army). We may not be spending this Thanksgiving with family, but my good friend Charissa of No Cook Paleo fame is coming up from Austin with her pup to help us eat ALL the food. We’re going to be watching football, drinking our favorite hard cider (in the form of the Cinnamon Cider Bomb recipe at the end of this post), and stuffing our faces with smoked turkey and pumpkin pie! It’s going to be great.

I wrote up our Thanksgiving menu yesterday so I could start making things ahead of time, but if you aren’t as anal as me and haven’t yet gotten your feast all planned out or if you haven’t figured out what to bring if you aren’t hosting yourself, then I’ve got a ton of delicious recipes for you to choose from. It’s my take on the Fireball whiskey and hard cider combo that’s apparently all the rage among college kids these days, but without the propylene glycol. (In case you weren’t aware Fireball contains propylene glycol which is an ingredient also found in antifreeze…yuck!). Cinnamon Cider Bomb with Homemade Maple Cinnamon Simple Syrup

Serves: 2
  • For Cinnamon Maple Simple Syrup:
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • For cocktail:
  • 12 oz hard cider (I like this one and this one)
  • 2-4 oz bourbon
  • 1 Tbs Maple Cinnamon Simple Syrup
  • Sliced apples to garnish (optional)
  1. For Maple Cinnamon Simple Syrup: Combine water and cinnamon sticks in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 mins. Remove cinnamon sticks. Bring water back to a boil and add maple syrup. Simmer until starting to thicken and reduced to about 1 cup. Refrigerate.
  2. For cocktail:
  3. Split 12 oz can hard cider between two glasses and add 1-2 ounces bourbon to each glass. Add 1 Tbs Maple Cinnamon Simple Syrup and stir to combine. Garnish with apple slices and enjoy!

If you’re too lazy to make simple syrup (it’s super easy but I wouldn’t blame you), use a sweeter cider like Angry Orchard or Woodchuck and add a couple drops of food grade cinnamon essential oil (I use Young Living Essential Oils) to add the cinnamon-y goodness.  But I highly recommend making the Maple Cinnamon Simple Syrup. It’s delicious and any leftovers can be used on pancakes or waffles, added to your coffee for a festive twist, or stirred into nut butter and used as a dip for apples.
